TOPIC: GREATNESS AND PUMA FAMILY

Greatness for me is being able to do something at a consistently high level over a long time while you are still continuing to evolve and constantly improve yourself, and being the best. Being part of a great company such as PUMA and of its Only See Great campaign, and joining so many people that I personally admire, is special to me. As a chess player, I am a huge fan of sports and that makes this even better! I really like PUMA and I’ve been a fan of the brand for several years, I love chess and that’s what I want to spread through being part of this.

TOPIC: THE JOURNEY AS THE MAIN GOAL

I have never been motivated for specific goals in my chess career. I just always wanted to learn to be better each time that I play and now I do have a goal of being the first player to reach that 2900 rating threshold in chess, but what’s more important to me is the journey that would possibly get me there. It’s being able to do all the right things to give myself a chance to do that. I care about this a lot in my day-to-day life.

TOPIC: PHYSICAL TRAINING TO COMPETE AT THE TOP

I love sports and that’s how I train. I do football, I started to play padel recently, I also do some exercises with a personal trainer but he always tries to make it about competition because that’s what motivates me. I don’t know if it’s essential to be in good shape to be a good chess player, but I know that I do play a lot better when I do feel well and when I am at my best physically. For sure. Recently I felt, especially after the World Championship – even during the World Championship – that I somehow lacked energy. I always loved doing sports, so now I’m just trying to do it more and more, eating healthy. I already feel better and I feel I’m getting more energy.

TOPIC: THE LONGEST GAME IN THE CHESS HISTORY

The sixth game in Dubai was very memorable for me and something that will be remembered for a long time in the chess history as the longest game in the World Championship. What was most memorable for me personally, during the last 1h of play, is that I was very calm. I was not stressed, even though there was only little time on the clock, and what I felt after I made the last move was just deep satisfaction of having pulled through and having done things the right way at the end.

TOPIC: A GREAT MIDDLEGAME GETS YOU TO CHECKMATE

In chess the best players are so well prepared in the openings that very often you will jump right to the middlegame and the game will stay in the middlegame for most of the time. Then the endgame becomes almost a pure formality. That’s what is fascinating for me about the middlegame: sometimes with the queens, sometimes without the queens on the board, sometimes you are pursuing strategical and sometimes you are pursuing more immediate tactical goals. The things you can do are so diverse. I think keeping your vigilance, your concentration, can be hard because you constantly have to reevaluate the positions, because the circumstances will change a lot. That’s often what sets the best players apart from the others, they are able to constantly reevaluate and be nimble in their minds.
